Notes on Huxley's Point Counter Point

This was the last title whose first was in binding 5. Book blocks in both #5 and #6 bindings have the First Modern Library Edition notation. In an e-mail dated June 2 2013 to the ModernLib Mailing List, Barry Neavill offers this analysis:

"It was common for the ML at this period to bind only part of a printing and to store remaining copies as unbound sheets. The sheets were bound as needed. If a new title was a failure, the ML saved on binding costs. The ML wasn't expecting Point Count Point to be a failure -- the first printing was 10,000 copies -- but it appears to have been more efficient to warehouse part of a large printing in sheets. The first printing with the #5 binding could be considered the first printing with a first state binding and copies with the #6 binding would be the first printing with a second state binding. Copies in the #6 binding may have had a later printing of the jacket.

"The second printing of Point Counter Point was for 5,000 copies in August 1931 and the third printing was for 4,000 copies in November 1932. These would have been in the #7 binding."
