Notes on O'Neill's Identifying the true first of this book is a bit tricky. It has a spring 1928 list at the end of the volume, which includes Dumas, Three Musketeers but not Apuleius, Golden Ass. The second printing of the book, with a fall 1928 list at the end of the volume (includes Apuleius but not Dostoyevsky, Brothers Karamazov), retains the "First Modern Library Edition 1928" statement on the verso of the title page. Further, there are two different dust jacket styles that can qualify as firsts: (a) the text style with the small logo near the top of the front panel and (b) the pictorial style. According to ML scholar Barry Neavill, "at this time the ML was experimenting with pictorial dj's and offering booksellers their choice of uniform typographic or pictorial jackets on selected titles." Speaking of the pictorial, there's no number on the DJ spine, nor are there the horizontal bands near the top and bottom of the DJ's front panel that became typical of the pictorials of the 30's.
